Why Leeds International Film Festival? Although Leeds has a noted and fascinating past as an historic wool mill town, these days it is more widely known for its modern cultural attributes. It's the largest film festival outside London. Founded in 1987, it is held in November at various venues throughout Leeds,Yorkshire. In 2015, the festival welcomed over 40,000 visitors and showed over 300 films from around the world, shorts and features, commercial and independent. It in my opinion has shaped the city in terms of entertainment culture. The 30 anniversary edition of Leeds International Film Festival took place 3–17 November 2016. This shows the traditional value it has and how important it is to the city. It is backed by the Leeds City Council, today Leeds is a major centre for film production and exhibition. A qualifying event for the BAFTAs and the Oscars, Leeds International Film Festival is a national celebration of global filmmaking culture.
The festival is supported by Leeds City council and the festival office is based in Leeds Town Hall, together with Leeds Young Film Festival (formerly Leeds Children & Young People's Film Festival.
At Leeds International Film Festival you can experience the extraordinary diversity of global filmmaking culture with acclaimed films from over 50 countries.
Leeds will be the North's digital capital in 2017
This film festival would celebrate 100 years since Louis le Prince filmed the people and traffic in ‘Leeds Bridge Scene’ at a spot now marked with a Leeds Civic Trust blue plaque.
