WHY A ZINE

WHY A ZINE?

The decision came about from researching various books on ethical practice.
The following books were initially read for research purposes;
- Design Studies Theory and Research
- Looking Closer 3 Classical Writings
- Looking Closer 5 Critical Writings
- Graphic Design Theory - readings from the field

These books boasted a great collaboration from pioneering creatives and theorists of their craft, such as Bierut, Helfand, Heller, Poynor, Drentell, Bennett and Lupton. The way they articulated and expressed  themselves was so inspiring and really motivated me to create ethical design.

The problem:

It took 4 books and an abundance of online articles to fully understand ethical graphic design as well motivate myself to produce more ethical work. This enabled the idea to produce a zine that works with a similar purpose of informing, teaching and influencing creatives, in a much simpler format.

It’s important to note that throughout the research period a lot of time was wasted reading information that was not really relevant. The most informative knowledge gathered was quotes and extracts taken from theorists.
