STUDIO BRIEF 02 PRIMARY RESEARCH

Primary research was undertaken with 15-20 graphic design students, to understand other creatives viewpoints on ethical graphic design. The zeen’s purpose is essentially to motivate so understanding why there is a lack of interest in the first place enables me to produce a more specific direction for content.

1. What is ethical graphic design?
2. Do you think advertising defines the purpose of graphic design today?
3. Are you interested in producing ethical graphic design?
4. Do you personally find the study interesting?
5. Do you define a ‘good’ piece of graphic design in relation to it’s aesthetic or meaning?

Many did not answer the first question, which led me to believe they do not have a definition. Everyone agreed to question 2. A large section of the study stated it was an interesting topic, however creatively they find it limiting and more difficult to address. In relation to the last question majority stated the aesthetic is important to create something visually satisfying which pulls in the audience, the meaning does contribute but is not always the main priority.

This research was crucial to the development of my visual investigation and general content. As the design is really purposed for this specific audience. The target audience is for graphic designers, so understanding their views is imperative to the success of the product. The general themes from the primary research, conveyed that the zeen needed to be produced in a method that creates interest in the topic as well being visually engaging.
