EXPERIMENT I - 27 CLUB

A collage combination of a Renaissance painting “The Pains of Hell” done by artist Fra Angelico and A scene from 1974 movie, by Mario Bava called ‘Lisa and the Devil’ The use of Renaissance painting is to foreshadow his chaotic lifestyle, and the wrong doings he faced throughout his life, especially towards the end of his life. Satan depicted at the bottom of this art is shown chewing on three of the damned as he grasps two others, this symbolizes the remaining band members of The Rolling Stones after Jones’ death. It also depicts a sense of innocence towards Brian himself, draped in white as he onlooks the hellish image. A month before Brians death, he was kicked from the band for on going drug issues etc. This painted the musician in a negative light, and unfairly so considering the antics that fellow bandmates Richards and Jagger were up to. It was this negative representation, that contributed to Brian Jones being deleted from the history books of The Rolling Stones. He was an unsung hero for the band however all recognition was given to Jagger and Richards as the main founders of the group. My artwork allows to reposition the portrayal of Brian and the rest of the band. Sympathy for the devil is one of their most famous tracks but the semantic symbolism involved not only promotes the track but reveals a deeper message.
