Title Design:
By making the typography in the cover the focal point of the design, it not only steps away from traditional uses of typography in science genre books, but all books in general. Typography in book design is normally used to enhance the image of the cover, it can be bold in intent but it is never really the focus but an addition. It is difficult to ‘break boundaries’ in design, as there is not many styles that have not been achieved by now. How it can be attained isn’t just by the design aspect but what the semantic field behind the design is. My cover design breaks boundaries due to the rarerity of a title in a book cover being the main attraction, whilst still deploying a sense of the narrative and concepts through the typographic design alone. This has created an imaginative concept and original iterpretation of the brief, whilst adhearing to the requirements of the brief to be excuted with strong use of typography. By adopting a minimal, typographic led design it veers away from the traditional or typical expentancy of what a cover should look like in this genre, this demonstrates a good understanding of the marketplace, and has a point of difference from other book covers.
The title design acts as a visual respresentation of itself. When you break up the title, the main words of importance are, Brief, History and Time. The method of shadow and layering the typography aids in visually representing these themes. It also relates to Hawkings writing process undertaken in this book, his aim was to make complex science theory relatable to the common man. By adopting a minimal simplistic design, it replicates this message.
